Top 10 Things to Do in June

June means summer, which means Summer @ CALS is back! From crafts and concerts to magic and baseball, there’s something fun all June (and July) long—and the best part is that it’s free! Load up the car and head to your local library to take in all the activities; events kick off early in the month, so don’t miss out!

  1. Wolves of K Street
    • Veteran investigative journalists Brody Mullins and Luke Mullins trace the rise of the modern lobbying industry through the three dynasties—one Republican and two Democratic—that have enabled corporate interests to infiltrate American politics and undermine our democracy. Join us at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater on Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. for this free talk with Brody Mullins.
  2. Southwest Little Rock Bicycle Rodeo
    • CALS, Recycle Bikes for Kids, and the City of Little Rock have partnered to give away 100 bikes and new helmets from Arkansas Children’s Hospital Safety Office! Join us for a bike parade and activities on Saturday, June 15. Bikes will be given on a first come, first served basis; children must have a parent present. If you already have a bike, join us for a bike safety refresher.
  3. Check out a telescope
    • June is a wonderful time to look up at the night sky. On June 3 and 4 you can see six planets in a line during the early morning hours (about 20 minutes before sunrise). Telescopes must be checked out and returned to the same branch. Read about them here
  4. Read Eruption
    • One of the most awaited books this summer comes from the mind of the late Michael Crichton and James Patterson. At the time of his death, bestselling author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain) was working on a passion project that he never got to finish. Waiting for the right co-author, his wife eventually gave the unfinished manuscript to legendary mystery author James Patterson to finish. Place a hold for it here.
  5. Find a S@C Kickoff party
    • You can’t start Summer @ CALS without a kickoff party! And just in case, we have multiple! Join us at Children’s Library on June 8 for Camp CALS, the Wet & Wild Water party with the Sherwood Fire Department at Sanders on June 10, or facepainting and snacks at McMath on June 15. Find all the Summer @ CALS events and sign up at cals.org/summer
  6. Check out the CALS Annual Report
    • 2023 was quite the ride at CALS; it was an adventure, if you will. We tracked down stories from patrons to help us tell the success of library, both big and small. Read the report here. Have a story that you think we might like to hear? Send it to askcals@cals.org.
  7. Guitar Wars II: Return of the Picks
    • Get a chance to see local talent before it’s discovered. Guitar Wars is a local guitar contest with adult and youth categories. The contest lasts most of the day Saturday, June 8; stop by Ron Robinson Theater and see who wins the war.
  8. Check out the Great Courses on Kanopy.
    • Watch enriching courses from the world’s greatest professors. Learn about languages, cooking, history or explore the world, all from the comfort of your phone, computer, or TV. Find out more here.
