Introducing the CALS Cruiser
While the Central Arkansas Library System has a significant number of branches when compared to the service size, we saw a need to fill in areas that were being missed for patrons who are not easily able to take part in the services. As we always say, “Libraries are for everyone!” So, we worked to get the CALS Cruiser up and running.
Let’s get down to the nuts-and-bolts and…books. The CALS Cruiser is a custom bookmobile designed by Farber Specialty Vehicles on a 2024 Mercedes Sprinter 26’ chassis. The Cruiser will house its own collection of books and DVDs.
Just like other CALS branches, the Cruiser will also offer library services, including Wi-Fi, printing, faxing, scanning, office supplies, and notary services. Programming will be layered in, including popular programming like Lawyers in the Library and Drop-in Tech Help.
Bookmobile Manager Katherine Blake, and an assortment of library assistants, will man the vehicle. Moving an entire library is a taxing job, so she will always bring a buddy.
“Parked Service Days” will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, where the Cruiser will be at a specific location for up to 4 hours. “Lobby Stops” will occur when the bookmobile makes multiple quick stops in a single day to places like community centers and assisted living facilities. The Cruiser will also make its way to community outreach events. Anyone interested in having the CALS Cruiser visit their community can fill out the request form.
Introducing Katherine Blake
Katherine started working with CALS in 2017 as a part-time library assistant at Main. She has worked as a children’s programmer at Nixon, and most recently, a full-time teen programmer at Main.
“My goal for the CALS Cruiser is to reach patrons in all parts of Little Rock, and everywhere our service area takes us. Everyone should have access to their library no matter what, and that is my goal for the Cruiser.”
