March is Women’s History Month, and at CALS we’re exploring everything that makes for a powerful woman in history. The Roberts Library is hosting a series of events throughout the system. This month’s Legacies & Lunch will be Rhonda Stewart: “Six Generations of Arkansas Women” (If you missed it, you can watch it here) and don’t miss the Fletcher movie night showing of The Woman King.

Off the Shelf will feature new releases in both physical and digital media, exhibitions, and highlight larger system- wide programs. We hope this publication serves our patrons by providing current news about our collection-- the foundation of all great libraries.

The Central Arkansas Library System and the Center for Arkansas Legal Services have once again teamed up to offer Lawyers in the Library! The last series of events helped more than 50 people find legal help at no cost to them. Come listen to legal presentations and an opportunity to ask a lawyer your civil legal question.

Why are Arkansas’s bears considered the most successful reintroduction of a large carnivore anywhere in the U.S.? Why are native gardens better for the environment than gardens full of non-natives? Why are trees, shrubs, and flowering plants better than turf grass lawns? How should you start a native garden? What do you need to know to germinate native seeds for your yard?

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and if you don’t have a CALS library card, you are missing out. This card is like extreme couponing on steroids. There are the obvious ways to save:

• Books. Instead of buying physical books or even paying to download copies, you have access to over one million pieces in the CALS collection.

Don’t have reliable internet at home? CALS can help. CALS has acquired a collection of hotspots that patrons can check out and use at home. Help with homework, work from home, or just use it to stream that show everyone seems to be talking about. A mobile hotspot can deliver a strong, fast, and secure online connection just about wherever you go.

Registration is open and available for Central Arkansas Library System’s Summer Reading Club! Join the Club for prizes, crafts, and a calendar packed with events for all ages. This year’s theme is “Tails & Tales” and explores stories of animals, dragons, and even mermaids! Registration is free and available at cals.beanstack.org.
