What Are You Reading? Dr. Gaurav Kumar

I am a Professor of Accounting at University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I am originally from India and have lived in Little Rock since 2006. So, I am an Arkansan by heart by now. The only thing missing is accent, because Little Rock is home.

What are you reading at the moment?

I love to read both fiction and non-fiction books. Whenever I have travel coming up, my Kindle is lined up with books. In fiction, I have read pretty much all John Grisham books and I’m now reading some books by Attica Locke. I just finished reading Bluebird, BluebirdI just loved how the author takes a small town in Texas and pens such an interesting story around the town’s people and their history, going back several decades.

In non-fiction, I love reading books about business and investing. I just finished reading Netflixed by Gina Keating. This book tracks the history of Netflix from early days, when it was just a DVD-by-mail company, and how Netflix led to the bankruptcy of the Blockbuster video store chain. Another one of my favorites is the Motley Fool Investment Guide. Next on my list is The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker.

What book or other media most contributed to your success today?

I would have to say probably the Motley Fool Investment Guide. This book taught me the importance of sticking to a budget and saving, and how even investing a small amount of money over a long period of time can change my life. I have two daughters (12 and 8 years old) and I try to have my 12-year-old read the Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens, but she did not show as much interest in it yet. Maybe in a few years.

What children’s book do you wish every child could read?

My 8-year-old daughter loves to read to me aloud, and one of her favorites is the Dr. Seuss book series. I love the hidden messages in Dr. Seuss books.
