Top Ten Things to Do in October!

October is bringing the books and the booooo’s. With so many free activities to choose from, you’ll find yourself returning to CALS again and again this month.

  1. Finish off Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) with an art project with local artist, Jose Hernandez (Oct. 2) or cook and break bread at the Hispanic Heritage Month-themed Family Dinner Night (Oct. 8) at Williams.
  2. Get into Spooky Season at Ron Robinson with their lineup of movies. Start with a double scare of Ghostbusters and A Nightmare on Elm Street (Oct.4), catch the classic Labyrinth (Oct. 5), or take it way back with Rear Window (Oct. 8). There are two chances to take in Hocus Pocus (Oct. 19) and three times to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show (Oct. 12 & 26).
  3. Read What I Ate in One Year: And Related Thoughts by Stanley Tucci. A record of Tucci’s life through the moments and meals he shared in a year. A perfect culinary memoir and example of how people and food enrich each other and our broader lives.
  4. Join genealogist and community historian Bessida Cauthorne White for the 2024 Annual Genealogy Workshop (Oct. 5). Sessions include “Recognizing and Sharing Family Treasures” and “How to Create a Family Heritage Cookbook.” This event will be held in person at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater. Lunch provided with early registration.
  5. Have fun with your food, Halloween Edition! Candy Catapult at Fletcher (Oct. 3), Eerie Onigiri at Fletcher (Oct. 9), “Witches Brew” (it’s herbal tea) at Mini Main (Oct. 10), Monster Halloween Cookies at Mini Main (oct. 28), and Fire Building & S’mores at Fletcher (oct. 31).
  6. Have some Halloween fun with Theatrical Makeup at Dee Brown (Oct. 4) thanks to Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts theater staff. Registration is required.
  7. Join us for a special presentation of CatVideoFest, meet some adoptable cats, and help raise much-needed funds for Community Cats of Central Arkansas (Oct. 19).
  8. Watch the new Deadpool movie, starring Ryan Reynolds as the “Merc with the Mouth” and Hugh Jackman as the Mutant X-Man in Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool is offered a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority, but instead recruits a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction.
  9. The new CALS Cruiser is making the rounds; join us for various dates and locations. The Cruiser has its own collection of books that will be traded out based on where it’s stopping. Plus, you can find it at special events around town. Find us and come say “Hi!”
  10. Visit the Toy Library at Nixon Library in Jacksonville to check out a costume! Do you have an indecisive child or more parties to go to that require a literal costume change? Don’t worry—the Toy Library has a selection of costumes to choose from.
BONUS: (there’s always a bonus) Plan to celebrate Die de Muertos with us on November 1. There will be a parade, an altar exhibition, food, and entertainment.
