Oceans of Possibilities, Oceans of Fun!

Summer Reading Club (SRC) is almost here and this year is packed with fun events, cool projects, and of course, lots of reading! This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities” and explores stories of mysteries, adventure, friendships and more that take place deep within the sea.  Registration is free and available at cals.beanstack.org. If you’re not familiar with SRC, it’s a national bookclub that takes place in the Summer to help encourage readers to continue learning outside of the school year. SRC is open to all ages, with segments divided into: early literacy, children, teens, and adults. Participants are encouraged to read books or graphic novels, listen to books or watch movies; completed titles are counted toward the individuals totals and prizes are awarded as milestones are met.

Each week there will be drawings for prizes done at each branch. To be entered into each drawing, patrons must earn a “badge,” after earning seven badges, you have completed the program! (Don’t worry, you and your kids can keep participating, every badge you earn gets you into a drawing for a prize.) Badges are earned by logging and reviewing books or movies as well as completing activities or attending virtual programs. And upon completion of the program, kids and teens will receive a free book

In addition to reading, there are great SRC events at CALS branches throughout the summer. SRC performers and activities include magicians Tommy Terrific and Scott Davis, musicians Brian and Terri Kinder and mömandpöp, drummer Stephin Booth, puppeteer Lela Bloom, and hands-on science with Museum of Discovery. Many locations serve free meals for youth ages 18 & under. Visit bemightlylittlerock.org for times and locations.

This year, Community Bakery will be offering cookie kits with the Summer Reading Club theme. Every kit sold will donate $5 back to the Friends of CALS fund to help offset the costs of programming like Summer Reading Club.
