March is Women’s History Month

Every March, we pause to celebrate Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the pioneers, glass-ceiling breakers, and everyday heroes who have shaped the course of human events. While it officially became a national observance in 1987, the movement actually took root in 1978 as a local “Women’s History Week” in Santa Rosa, California. From the suffragists who campaigned for the ballot to the unsung scientists who mapped the stars, this month serves as a vital reminder that history is not a solo act, but a rich tapestry woven by the courage and intellect of women across every generation.

Here at CALS, we believe that every story deserves to be heard—especially those that were once sidelined or silenced. Our shelves are living archives of the legacies left by women who challenged the status quo through literature, art, and activism. From the revolutionary prose of Toni Morrison to the groundbreaking discoveries of Marie Curie, we invite you to join us in this journey of “shelf-discovery” as we celebrate the resilient spirit and enduring contributions of women throughout history.
