Solar Eclipse – Monday, April 8, 2024

On April 8, 2024, central Arkansas will be in the path of totality of the solar eclipse. For people in the area viewing the eclipse, you can expect around 2 minutes and 27 seconds of darkness during the event.

The partial eclipse will begin at 12:33 pm, with the total eclipse beginning at 1:51 PM, and the partial eclipse ending at 3:11PM. As many know, it is unsafe to stare directly at an eclipse; patrons can pick up glasses at CALS locations (while supplies last). Read about the historical eclipse of 1834 here and of 1918 here.

Eclipse Glasses Giveaway

CALS cardholders can pick up eclipse glasses at all our locations beginning March 4. We will not hold glasses or reserve over the phone–distribution will be on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last.

Individual cardholders will be able to claim up to eight (8) pairs of eclipse glasses. Multiuser cardholders will be able to claim up to two (2) pairs per authorized user on the account (or eight, whichever number is higher). Non-cardholders who are eligible for a CALS card are welcome to apply for a card and can receive their glasses the day they sign up for a card.

The Milam Library (Perryville) will be closed April 8. All other CALS locations will be closed from 1:30-2:30PM on April 8, for our staff to be able to experience the eclipse.

CALS will be hosting a number of events leading up to, and including the time of, the eclipse. Click the link below for events around the system. More are being added every day, so check back often. Patrons are welcome to visit any CALS location on April 8 for eclipse viewing.
