Top Ten Things to Do in November!

November gets off to an exciting start with our annual Day of the Dead/Día de Muertos celebration on Friday, November 1. Join us at Library Square and the Ron Robinson Theater alley from 5:30-8:30PM for a parade, altar exhibitions, entertainment, food, and activities for the entire family!

What are your ancestors’ wildest dreams? What do you think the future of freedom looks like? How can we preserve our cultural roots as we enter a new era? Imagining Black Futures: Young Artists Envision Afrofuturism invites young artists to explore themes of Black identity, autonomy, and liberation through the lens of Afrofuturism. Black/Afro-diasporic artists enrolled in 9th through 12th grade may submit original artwork for consideration. Submission deadline is December 2.

Won’t you, please, help a neighbor? CALS is once again hosting a Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive, November 1-30. Help us and Arkansas PBS collect new and gently used sweaters for your neighbors in need! Last year your generous donations brought in 1185 winter weather items. Let’s top that this year! Donations accepted at all CALS locations, all month long.

It’s also time for the annual Robert “Say” McIntosh STOP THE VIOLENCE Toy Drive. You can contribute by dropping off a new and unopened toy at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center or any Pulaski County CALS location by December 5.

Calling all college football fans! Don’t miss this tailgate-style event! Join us at the McMath Library on Thursday, November 7 for a chance to meet Arkansas Razorback quarterback Taylen Green! Bring your library card (or sign up on-site) to score an exclusive autograph and connect with one of Arkansas’s favorite players. Get in the game with a lively atmosphere packed with delicious food, great music, and plenty of fun.

The Big Library Read runs from November 7-21. Download the Libby app from our Digital Library page and have books delivered free to your device. All you need is your CALS card number and PIN. This month you can read Montgomery and the Case of the Golden Key by Tracy Occomy Crowder. No waitlist. No holds.

Lawyers in the Library is back on Wednesday, November 13 at the Dee Brown Library. The Center for Arkansas Legal Services will feature a presentation on the topic of Record Sealing, including what can and cannot be sealed, what steps are required to get a record sealed, and more.

The CALS Used Book Sale is back at our Port Industrial Hub location, 7773 Sloane Drive. Come shop for $1 paperbacks and $2 hardbacks!

The Library Speakers Consortium is presenting three authors/four virtual discussions that you’re sure to enjoy. First up is Thursday, November 7, with “A Navajo Investigator’s Search for the Unexplained”  with Stanley Milford, Jr.  On Thursday, November 14, join author Javier Zamora for a discussion “On Childhood Migration from Central America.” Finally we present “Native Rights and Culture in Fiction” with author Mona Susan Power. Javier Zamora will also present a discussion in Spanish on Saturday, November 9.

You can always count on great programming from the Ron Robinson Theater and November is no exception. Saturday, November 2, is a big day to get the month going! At 4PM, take an in-depth look at the journey of Picasso’s life and trace his path to genius with Exhibition on Screen Presents Young PicassoAt 7PM, it’s the return of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, featuring The Crumbs and their unique bluegrass twist on the movie soundtrack which they call “The Rocky Horror Pickin’ Show.” Join us Monday, November 4, for a free showing of Bridge of Spies followed by a presentation and book signing by Francis Gary Powers Jr., the son of the U2 pilot. On Saturday, November 9, join Arkansas PBS and CALS for a FREE preview of Ken Burns’ Leonardo da Vinci documentary exploring the artist’s genius!
