Speaker Series: Nell Irving Painter
CALS, as part of the Six Bridges Book Festival has arranged a series of virtual speaking events. On February 18th, Nell Irving Painter, author of Sojourner Truth: A life, A Symbol, honored us with a panel discussion moderated by Jessica McDaniels, CALS Community Coordinator. This discussion can be watched on the CALS YouTube channel.
Nell discussed a variety of topics, including from where she gets her inspiration to how this last year has made her feel about race relations, John Hope Franklin, and hopeful, respectively.
Creating Black Americans was her hardest book as she was faced with a number of constraints. Specifically purchasing the rights to the works that were featured. During her lecture, Painter, discussed fascinating issues like how language shapes your thoughts. As a historian, professor, author and artist, Painter has a life view that has been shaped by her varied background. She encouraged listeners to challenge the way we view history through a modern lens and to acknowledge the fact that racial and black history is American history. Her greatest accomplishments are being sane and simply still being here, being able to write and create at this age.

His work has been featured in several magazines, including The Oxford American, The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, and Tin House. He was named one of Granta magazine’s Best Young American Novelists in 2007. Free registration is required.
