I sell pizza and pizza accessories. I was given a job at Vino’s Brewpub in 1999 because management got sick of me skipping school there. Since then I’ve been a produced playwright and published author of short fiction, poetry, and academic articles. Recent graduate of UA Little Rock’s Creative Writing Department.

Introducing Fenix, 4-and-a-half year-old patron at Children’s Library, who is going to give us her thoughts on books:

What did you read in that book you liked about foxes?

“Aww, look at these baby foxes—they are playing with their mom!”

I serve as a trial attorney at the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Arkansas, which is an organization that works to ensure no person is disadvantaged simply because of their inability to afford private legal counsel.  My hometown is Osceola, AR, but I moved to Little Rock in 2011,

These are just a few words that may come to mind when you walk through the Bookstore at Library Square, where Byron Werner’s art exhibition is in its closing days. National Novel Writing Month is upon us, as of November 1st! And while the internet is full of advice on how to write a novel in a month, it’s also worth considering why you might want to do it.

In 2011, I wrote a novel in November, though that’s putting it a bit loosely.

I’m Joe Hudak, and I’m one of CALS’ branch services coordinators. I like to read nonfiction, and I enjoy cooking and DIY projects. My staff pick is the tile cutter. It’s part of the tool library at our Dee Brown branch. An average person might re-tile a room once or twice in a decade. Why buy an expensive tool that you’ll rarely use when you can instead borrow it from the library?

Stained, a little battered, but still working—the typewriter of famed Arkansas author Dee Brown has emerged from our archives. The machine now reposes grimy and authentic under glass at the CALS Dee Brown Library. It may even be the typewriter Brown used to write his shattering, iconic history of the American West, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.
