Shannon Wright Holding Her Own: The Exceptional Life of Jackie Ormes & Twins
About the author:
Shannon Wright is an award-winning illustrator and cartoonist who lives in Richmond, Virginia. Some of her clients include the Guardian, Time magazine, the New York Times, Mother Jones, NPR, Google, and Scholastic.
About the books:
As a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book, the evocative picture book biography Holding Her Own: The Exceptional Life of Jackie Ormes (illustrated by Wright and authored by Traci N. Todd) tells the story of a groundbreaking cartoonist who drew some of the first empowering depictions of Black women in America. Ormes was the first Black woman cartoonist to be nationally syndicated in the United States and was also a journalist, fashionista, philanthropist, and activist who used her incredible talent and artistry to spread joy and hope. In the middle-grade graphic novel Twins, everything starts changing for two sisters (and best friends) when they start middle school.
