Soyoon Ahn

Soyoon Ahn, who grew up in her native Seoul, Korea, currently resides in Russellville, Arkansas, where she is a potter, painter, and art educator at Arkansas Tech University. She also received her BFA in fine arts from Tech and has won a number of awards for her ceramics and Korean folk paintings.

Many of her artworks are influenced by Korean folk arts, called “Minwha,” and she utilizes these traditional Korean folk painting designs in modern American ceramics. She has experimented with various surface decorations for ceramics such as an inlay technique with porcelain slip, painting with cobalt carbonate, and sgraffito with underglaze to apply flower motifs–such as lotus, peony, and chrysanthemum—onto her ceramic works.
