2nd Friday Art Night at Roberts Library (May 2022)
The Shape of Home: Multimedia Works of Diane Harper
Friday, May 13 through Saturday, July 30, 2022
Loft Gallery, CALS Galleries & Bookstore at Library Square
The Shape of Home exhibition explores the idea of weighted memories and the emotional imprint of cultural and personal history. Using mixed media works, Harper examines the theme of physical geometry associated with home. A row of small, colorful houses dances across the horizon of Count Backwards from 100, and a decaying cardboard house occupies the spiritual and dreamlike mindscape of the sculptural piece, Uprooted.
Diane Harper is a mixed-media expressive artist who draws upon ideas of weighted memories and the emotional imprint of cultural and personal history. Though her work tends toward the autobiographical, she addresses universal themes. Appointed as family archivist by her forensic photographer father at the end of his life, Harper culls images from his family photos for inspiration. She received training as a medical social worker and later returned to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to earn her studio art degree. Harper has found meaning in helping others connect with their most creative selves by teaching through her studio, as a faculty member of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, and as an adjunct instructor at Henderson State University. Although her early life was nomadic and seemingly rootless, she now lives a contented life with her husband and their cat, finally rooted in a community.
