For Susan Haygood, it’s all about the customer service

In conjunction with Rock It! Lab, we are featuring women led businesses for Women’s History Month.

Susan Haygood, owner of Haygood BBQ Concession & Catering

Susan Haygood is a woman business owner who runs a mobile food trailer in Little Rock, with a small crew. Haygood BBQ Concession & Catering set up in a few different locations and sell a variety of delicious smoked meats and tasty sides, with popular dishes like BBQ nachos, beef brisket, pulled pork and an amazing creation — the stuffed turkey leg! A slow smoked turkey leg that’s slightly cut open and piled with Cajun dirty rice. They have been in business for 11 years now and serve from the trailer, as well as offer drop offs and catering for corporate events, reunions, weddings, and church events. At Haygood BBQ, they like to say that “it’s all about the Q.”

Working in the food industry as a woman business owner presents a variety of obstacles. For Susan, her biggest challenge is time management, “Considering the many hats I wear, being a woman, prioritizing and balancing the business can be challenging.” But she also feels that these experiences “that arrive from being a business owner have opened me to be creative in decision making.  I take what I’ve learned from life experience and utilize it to enhance my business.

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change…Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Advice I would give to other women looking to start a business; “Seek support from other business owners; network through webinars, find online women’s business groups to join. Read books and internet articles on starting a business.  Find a mentor – having a good mentor can be as valuable as gold!  When you make mistakes don’t beat yourself up – examine what happened, learn from it, improve it and move on!” Right now, she’s looking to add more delicious creations to her menu.
